On Sep 22, 2025, I had the opportunity to visit the Malibu Hindu Temple, one of the oldest in the U.S., established in 1981. Beyond its architectural grandeur, the temple radiates profound spiritual energy.

During the visit, priests performed a special Ashirvachanam — Vedic chants invoking blessings for health, peace, prosperity, and spiritual well-being of family, friends, and the universe. The temple houses Lord Venkateswara, Lord Shiva (infinite cosmic energy), Goddess Mahalakshmi, Lord Ganesh, Lord Murugan, Navagrahas, and Ram Parivar, Sri Krishna, among others. The upper deck was recently renovated with a pristine white fiberglass finish. My sincere appreciation to President Nadadur Kumar Garu, the board, and the volunteers for their dedicated service to the temple and the community.

Nestled in the heart of Malibu, the Malibu Hindu Temple stands as a living testament to the enduring spirit of Hinduism. Inspired by the grand temples of India, its intricate carvings, majestic towers, and sacred frescoes embody centuries of tradition and artistry, while vibrant festivals like Diwali and Navaratri transform it into a beacon of cultural unity and devotion.

From humble beginnings in the early 1900s to grand complexes today, Hindu temples in North America reflect a story of spiritual growth, cultural preservation, and community building.  The temples in North America are not just places of worship, they have become epicenters for contemplation, learning, celebration, architectural beauty, community, and charity.  They are transcending Culture, Values and traditions to younger generations. They became connecting bridges between Hindu and non-Hindu faiths in America.   There are approximately 1000+ Hindu temples across north America and close to 800 Temples in Canada.

Sanatana Dharma, one of the oldest continuously practiced religions and a holistic way of life, has evolved over millennia with a spirit of tolerance and accommodation, giving rise to many other spiritual traditions. To truly grasp the depth and breadth of Dharma, one must view it through a spiritual lens. Hindu Temples or Mandirs in North America are doing a phenomenal job of passing on this way of life to the next generations. The ancient science of Hindu temple architecture, known as Vastu Shastra, is a remarkable blend of art, astronomy, astrology, geology, ecology, geotectonic analysis, structural engineering, sculpture, drawing, mathematics, ethics, personal hygiene and spiritual discipline.

More on this profound architectural science will be shared in an upcoming blog.
